Nobewam (Ash), March 14, GNA - Mr Paul D. Wolfowitz, President of World Bank Group, has commissioned a 654 million-cedi basic school facility at Nobewam in the Ejisu-Juaben district as part of his visit to the Ashanti region.
The Nobewam Presbyterian basic school is one of the 40 basic schools constructed with the 4.5 million-dollar grant from the World Bank released to the Asanteman Council.
The school has six-classrooms, office and store, library, quarters that accommodates six teachers, potable water and a 20-seater toilet.
The school, which had 96 pupils in a dilapidated shed with five teachers now has an enrolment of 265 pupils and 11 teachers and a kindergarten.
Commissioning it, Mr Wolfowitz noted that the richness of Ghana depended on her educated people.
He said Ghana has resources such as cocoa and minerals that contributed to improve the economy but however added that the country could become rich if education was promoted to allow children attend schools.
Mr Wolfowitz emphasized that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene utilized the grant 93we gave to him by providing school facilities", adding that the facilities should be utilized by the children to enhance teaching and learning.
He therefore urged the pupils to take their studies seriously since they were going to be the future leaders of the country. Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning who accompanied the World Bank President, advised parents to take care of their children by providing them with their needs to enable them to concentrate on their studies and stop buying expensive clothing for funerals.
He urged the people in the community to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme to enable them receive the needed health care.
Among those present at the ceremony were Mr Osei Asibey Antwi, Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Mats Kalsson, Country Director of the World Bank, and Nana Boakye Ansah Debrah, Asokore-Mamponghene and chairman of the Promoting Partnership with Traditional Authorities Project (PPTAP). Source: GNA
